Cerro Gordo CUSD 100 was facing outdated facilities, overcrowding, and needed some security updates. To solve these problems, this project includes a connecting addition to the original 1929 three-story HS building and the 1963 cafeteria and gymansium building. The addition provides a new secured entry and building administration area to create a secure campus. A new properly sized cafeteria commons and competition junior high gym with seating for 500 is also included in the addition. Additional classroom space and a new flexible STEAM lab with equipment and overhead door allow for large-scale art and science projects. The addition also serves as a connecting corridor, minimizing students need to leave the secured facility during a typical school day.
Renovations reimagined a series of spaces. The new dining commons allowed for the current, more centrally located cafe in the 1963 gym building to be transformed into a future-focused student library space, making it easily accessible to support students in a way no other space currently can on campus. The new library space also allowed for the creation of two additional learning spaces and a collaborative teachers area in the previous library space. The new competition gymnasium allows for the current undersized gym to be reimagined into a flexible auditorium and performance space with ample seating for a capacity of 500+ audience members. Lastly, the relocation of the building administration allows for district administration to move to a more central and accessible location in the building. In addition to these major building modifications, site circulation was majorly improved with a new central drop off lane for both bus and car traffic in front of the existing 1929 building creating a much safer site. A re-built stair creates a welcome invitation to the historical building. |
