Monarch Landing, a senior living development located in Naperville, Illinois commissioned BLDD to renovate their existing formal dining space into a modern restaurant experience. The main design goal was to create a more intimate dining experience while remaining flexible and open for larger events. Addressing acoustics, lighting, and traffic flow were also high priorities along with new interior finishes.
The final solution “divides” the space into three separate zones through changes in floor materials, lowered ceiling elements, and the use of transparent decorative screens. It remains flexible and easily unified for larger events such as movie night or other activities.

Monarch Landing wanted to turn their tired, cafeteria-like cafe into a dynamic and fresh bistro environment, while finding efficiencies during the design process to better serve their residents and staff. The 124 seats can be arranged within a variety of settings which include the large main dining area, a more intimate banquet seating area, and the “pub,” which can be closed off with large barn doors for a private space or resident events.

The design team faced a unique challenge: how to create an exciting, contemporary atmosphere while maintaining excellent acoustics—particularly tricky after removing sound-absorbing elements like carpeting and tablecloths.
