RENOVATION REVOLUTION

K12 education is at a continual crossroads — the intersection of adapting to an ever-evolving technological revolution in the 21st century, while doing more with less due to shrinking budgets. Renovation creates a clear path from your past to your future.

At BLDD, we help school districts navigate this journey by transforming both historic and underutilized spaces through cost-saving renovation.

Our goal is to restore life, vigor and activity to your district by reimagining environments to create truly transformative architecture.

Re•INVENT

Transform an underutilized area of your district into a thriving destination that re-energizes the student-learning experience.

Mid City High School was developed to house the Davenport (IA) Community Schools’ Alternative High School program. To support this program, an existing three-story medical office building was renovated into a state-of-the-art, 21st-century education facility.

Completed in just 7.5 months, the 38,000 s.f. renovation included a new secure front entry and central stairway that connected the three floors, in addition to spaces for collaborative learning spaces, makerspaces, a media center and more.

How do you Re•INVENT your school spaces?

Who knows your district’s needs better than YOU? That’s why we enlist the help of your faculty, students, administrators and community to Think BIG and co-author the best renovation solutions for your facilities.

Through BLDD’s design-thinking process, Think BIG, you’ll uncover the ideal use for your space through authentic user feedback and prototyping.

Mahomet-Seymour Community Schools worked with BLDD to Think BIG and create a renovated and reimagined library. Through this process, the strongest ideas resulted in a “hacked” environment, where students and faculty tested the prototyped rooms to gather feedback. The hands-on testing and observation ensured the best solutions were part of the final design.

Re•STORE & Re•NEW

Preserve the iconic qualities of your facility, while reimagining its use for the evolving needs of your students.

Through renovations and an addition to a 1950s-era building on a tight city footprint, Geneseo High School was reinvented into an engaging, innovative and inviting high school, focused on providing modern facilities to support digital learning, academic achievement and fine arts and athletic excellence.

The highly adaptive design allows for spaces to be continually reimagined to transform to meet the needs of the district and community, today and in the future.

Renovation Value

Renovating can offer several sustainable, efficient and cost-saving solutions for your district, including:
  • Time Savings — typically faster than new construction
  • Material Savings — requires fewer “new” materials, and thus creates less landfill waste
  • Societal Savings — reduces displacement in urban communities
  • Cost Savings — many federal, state and local municipalities offer tax incentives and/or grants for renovating historic buildings

Historically, our clients have saved 20-25% by investing in major renovations compared to building new.

The costs of renovations can vary greatly based on a number of factors, such as:
  • Building Type — Will the building be used as a theater, a classroom, a makerspace or a field house?
  • Location — Is the facility located in a metropolitan or rural location?
  • Project Scope — Is the project small or large? The efficiency phenomenon known as “economy-of-scale” can work in your favor as the project increases in size.
  • Quality — Does the project require a high level of detail or the use of premium building materials?
  • Existing Conditions — Is the facility of significant age or has not been maintained well?
  • Hazardous Materials —  Are there asbestos containing materials and lead paint present?
