Located at the heart of campus, the Center for Student Life at Augustana College fuses together learning, dining and play to create a student hub that supports a well-rounded student experience. With a 35,000 sf expansion to the existing Thomas Treadway Library, this visionary “fusion facility” provides easily accessible, high-quality dining venues, a new and more efficient scale of library and student support services, as well as collaboration spaces and meeting areas for gatherings large and small. The facility blurs traditional lines to achieve distinct but connected functions. The rustic elegance of interior finishes creates inviting warmth that has defined the Center for Student Life as a destination for students and faculty alike.

Transform” is a word that is overused; however, when used in proper context the word conveys noteworthy elements of newness, innovation and purposefulness. The Center for Student Life at Augustana College is a concept and a structure that truly has transformed life for students, faculty and employees at the college.
Our new, innovative and purposeful combination of the central elements of a student’s life at a residential liberal arts college—the library, student activities and dining—is without precedent and creates a new place for students to gather, work and play. Located in the centroid of Augustana’s campus, the Center for Student Life was conceived to be a place where students would go “to see and be seen.

Bringing together living, learning, dining
This transformative project blurs the lines of spaces and redefines the roles of a traditional dining hall and library.
The library has been reinvented to provide students with access to media and information in an environment that supports and encourages 21st century learning. The seamless connectivity created by the Center for Student Life successfully provides a “campus hub” of activity and illustrates the college’s commitment to innovation.

The Center for Student Life at Augustana College represents the big ideas of many and the hard work of hundreds. It required open minds, a commitment to the students, lots of give and take, and vision about what was possible. The dedication of the planning group and the innovative approaches of everyone involved resulted in a transformative facility.
This kind of transformation is only possible when the relationships of the involved parties mature and develop past any superficial level. Our partners, BLDD Architects, in this project were as invested as we were. They shared our joys and our challenges at every juncture. They offered solutions for the many hurdles we faced. Most of all, they understood we wanted to do something special, and it is because of their expertise Augustana students will benefit for decades to come.
