New Life Covenant Church was designed to provide much needed space for the quickly growing congregation in the urban setting of the Humboldt Park community of Chicago. With Reverend Wilfredo De Jesus’ (Pastor Choco) vision that “nobody is beyond the grace of God,” the church began to look for a place to house its growing congregation.
1. Create a new home for a growing congregation
2. Become a beacon of hope within the community
3. Provide a sustainable worship and education facility
BLDD worked closely with the City of Chicago, the Department of Housing and Economic Development as well as the neighborhood and its Aldermen to bring the facility to life quickly for the community, to act as a ray of hope within the community. The resulting 27,000 s.f. building serves as a new worship and education facility for the congregation. The simple yet sculptural design of this LEED certified building contains three architecturally distinct spaces that are tied together through a common “River of Life” theme.
The church won a Good Neighbor Award for its achievement in enhancing the Chicago region as a great place to live and thrive. The awards showcase groundbreaking new, rehabbed, or redeveloped properties in the Chicago metropolitan region that have increased economic vibrancy and bolstered neighborhood pride.
