The addition for this project connected the existing building by means of a two-story glass enclosed corridor with skylights, providing a transparent connection between existing historical aspects and new. The upper level of the original building is connected to the addition by means of three bridges, allowing the spatial connection between existing and new to be a full two stories. In this design, the brick and stone of the north facade of the existing building becomes the finished south wall of the addition. Additionally, natural light is brought into interior space providing for a healthy work environment. Most importantly, however, this transparent connection showcases the rich architecture of the original building, achieving the goal of retaining the character of the School of Music Building.
