Garden Hills Elementary School

Champaign, IL

Reinventing the Garden Hills Elementary School to become a stronger option for the public in a “controlled choice” school district was one of the overarching goals of this additions and renovations project. Existing spaces were re-imagined, leaving those areas that fit within the new educational program refreshed but otherwise as is, and reconfiguring all others to create the flexible learning environment. A 31,000 s.f. addition was created to construct the unique spaces that could not be housed in the existing structure, such as a performance gymnasium with performing arts capabilities (with seating for 800), dining room and kitchen, a modern science room, kindergarten rooms in their own community, and administrative spaces organized to provide building access control. The addition received LEED Gold certification from the United States Green Building Council.
